N.Y. Official Fears City Will Face Suits Pertaining to Cleanup

NEW YORK — The city government could face lawsuits over the clearing of the World Trade Center site, its top legal officer said Friday.
“The single biggest issue that we’re dealing with now is liability . . . and in maybe 10 to 15 years from now, with people saying they got asthma or asbestos or lung injury,” said Michael Hess, New York’s corporation counsel.
Hess said he expects that the city will be hit with suits over the cleanup of debris and issues related to construction stemming from the Sept. 11 attacks.
