John Hurt stars as “The Elephant Man†(9:15 p.m., AMC), a hideously deformed innocent rescued from a carnival freak show by a kindly Victorian-era doctor (Anthony Hopkins), in director David Lynch’s dark but moving 1980 study of compassion and morality.

“60 Minutes II†(8 p.m., CBS) surveys the difficult terrain--topographical and otherwise--facing U.S special forces operating in Afghanistan.
“The E! True Hollywood Story†(8 p.m., E!) examines the trial of Claus von Blow, accused of the attempted murder of his wife, Sunny, a wealthy socialite--events that inspired the 1990 drama “Reversal of Fortune.â€
William Shatner treks through tonight’s episode of the Jason Alexander comedy “Bob Patterson†(9:30 p.m. ABC) with a guest spot as a rival motivational speaker.
