More Than 300 Join Fire Dept. Scarred by Loss

More than 300 young men raised their hands and swore to carry out their new duties as city firefighters--the first wave of recruits to begin since the World Trade Center attacks.
The recruits are joining a department racked by the loss of 343 firefighters, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani told them in a ceremony. But the department has grown stronger as a result, the mayor said.
“I thank you very much for doing this, and I want you to thank your families when you go home,†Giuliani said.
