Peace Corps
It is my sincere hope that John C. Rude’s “40 Years of Unsung Heroes Giving Peace a Chance†(Commentary, Oct. 15), on the value of the Peace Corps, will be read by many young people and will get them involved in understanding our neighbors around the world, including their values and traditions and, most important of all, their languages.
It brings to mind a joke often told in Hispanic countries: What do you call one who speaks three languages? Trilingual. What do you call one who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What do you call one who speaks only one language? A gringo.
Sad, but too often true.
