Plan to Save Farmland Adds Development Fees

San Joaquin County supervisors will try to save farmland from development by charging fees for building on agricultural land.
Supervisors voted 4 to 1 Tuesday to spend $49,920 to have a consultant prepare the required ordinance.
Officials said money collected from developers could strengthen levees, increase water supplies or restore flood plains.
Farmers, environmentalists and business groups will also offer recommendations. One supervisor said he was concerned the fees would be passed on and raise housing prices.
