Etiwanda’s Poe Breaks Free, Wins Inland Empire Race

Mike Poe of Etiwanda High broke away from Erick Maldonado of Chino Don Lugo and Tom Whelan of Redlands East Valley with 150 meters left to win the boys’ sweepstakes race in the inaugural Inland Empire Challenge cross-country meet Saturday at Guasti Regional Park in Ontario.

Poe, who spent much of the summer training with fellow junior Maldonado, clocked 15 minutes 20.7 seconds over the three-mile course.

Maldonado was second in 15:22.1 with senior Whelan third in 15:22.8.

Senior Lino Flores of Riverside Rudbidoux placed fourth in 15:35.2 to pace the Falcons to a 60-87 victory over runner-up Temecula Valley.

Sophomore Liza Pasciuto of Murrieta Valley led the Nighthawks to a 1-2 finish in the girls’ sweepstakes and a 27-67 victory over second-place Etiwanda.

Pasciuto, sixth in the national championships last year, ran 17:56.1 and junior teammate Rachael Corrington was second in 19:11.1.

Murrieta Valley is the No. 15-ranked girls’ team in Harrier magazine’s national poll.

In football:

Ventura St. Bonaventure 36, L.A. Cathedral 14--Jack Swisher completed six of 10 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns, and Lorenzo Booker rushed for 146 yards in 14 carries and scored three touchdowns to lift St. Bonaventure in a game between the No. 1 and 2-rated teams in Division XI.

St. Bonaventure (6-0) scored 22 points in the third quarter after leading, 8-7, at halftime. Booker, limited to 16 yards on five carries in the first half, scored on touchdown runs of two, 59, and 37 yards in the second half.

Booker had to cancel a recruiting visit to Florida State this weekend because the game was a last-minute addition to the Seraph schedule.

Cathedral (3-2) received 94 yards rushing from Ryan Kelley and 77 yards rushing from R.T. Cowins.
