Panel Recommends Secession Negotiations
A City Council committee voted Tuesday to begin negotiations with San Fernando Valley and harbor-area secession groups on ballot proposals to break the city apart.
The full council is expected to vote next week on whether to begin. City Administrative Officer William J. Fujioka told committee members that it was important for the city to have a voice in shaping the secession proposals that could go before voters in November 2002. Mayor James K. Hahn has also voiced support for negotiations.
Among the topics to debate are how to split the city’s 34,000 employees and its $2.4 billion in debt. Also up for discussion would be potential “alimony†payments to protect what would remain of Los Angeles from financial harm.
