Police Say Man Was Shot After He Pointed Object

A bank robbery suspect shot by police pointed an object at officers, prompting them to fire, authorities said Friday.
Jose Alberto Maciel, 26, of Santa Ana was in stable condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with gunshot wounds to the chest, said Police Lt. George Saadeh.
Police said a man carrying a semiautomatic gun held up a supermarket branch bank Thursday on Grand Avenue and ordered tellers to stuff money into a bag. A witness gave police the license plate number of a Honda Civic getaway car.
When officers tried to stop the vehicle, it hit a parked car, and the driver fled on foot, authorities said. He “extended his arms and pointed at officers with an unknown object,” prompting a Santa Ana police officer and an FBI agent to fire several times, Saadeh said.
A large amount of money was found in the trunk of the Civic, police said.
