Newhall Hart 35, Saugus 28--Keith Howell caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Matt Moore with 1:06 remaining as the Indians held on to win their 53rd consecutive Foothill League game and clinched their 11th league title in a row in a game at College of the Canyons.
Saugus drove to the Indians’ 12-yard line but Moore tipped a pass away from receiver Matt Hott in the end zone with one second left to preserve the victory.
Moore also completed 16 of 29 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns, including a 20-yard strike to John Grimes that tied the score, 28-28, midway through the fourth quarter. Moore also scored on a 62-yard counter play. He threw one interception.
Mickey Mercado rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries for Hart (10-0, 5-0).
Chris Ahlheim completed 15 of 26 passes for 212 yards, including a 17-yard scoring pass to Hott that gave the Centurions (6-4, 3-2) a 28-21 lead with 4:32 left in the third quarter. Ahlheim also scored the game’s first touchdown on a one-yard sneak. He had one pass intercepted.
