Ex-Councilman Pleads Guilty to Bribery

A former city councilman pleaded guilty to influence peddling, tax evasion and mail fraud charges Thursday that could put him in prison for 30 months.
In exchange for R.B. Jones’ plea to three felonies, the government will drop other charges.
He pleaded guilty to soliciting and accepting $5,000 from the California Water Services Co. in 1999 to influence other council members to approve a contract. And he admitted not reporting the income on his federal tax return.
Jones also was accused of netting $1,700 in a minority contracting scheme in which money was funneled via the U.S. mail for work not performed. He is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 4.
