Irvine Co. said construction will begin this summer on two shopping centers planned for its Newport Coast development.
Crystal Cove Promenade will be built on the east side of Coast Highway, between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach. Newport Ridge Center will be built a few miles away at Newport Coast Drive and San Joaquin Hills Road.
Crystal Cove is scheduled to open in the summer of 2002. At 125,000 square feet, it will be about 25% larger than the nearby Corona del Mar Plaza in Newport Beach.
Newport Ridge Center will be about 105,000 square feet and will include more businesses that serve local residents. Newport Ridge is expected to open next spring.
The Newport Coast development will have 3,000 single-family homes and 500 apartments.
