Karen Breshears, who took over as interim coach at Cornerstone Christian after George Baca’s abrupt resignation two weeks ago, wants to set the record straight.

She pitched for Cornerstone Christian in the mid-1990s, but she stops short of calling herself a pitcher.

“I pitched because we didn’t have anyone else,†she cracked.

Breshears, who played third base at Toledo and Virginia on scholarship, is the most recent pitcher of nine in Southern Section history to finish a season with a 0.00 earned-run average. She did it in 1995.

But she certainly doesn’t boast about it.

“That record is just ridiculous,†Breshears said. “I mean my name is there with people like Lisa Fernandez.â€

Because The Times separates softball statistics into three categories--City Section, Southern Section and Small Schools--Coach Peter Ackermann of Oaks Christian isn’t sure where his team’s statistics fit in.

Oaks Christian (10-2-1), with an enrollment of 159, will play seven games against City schools, 14 against Division I-IV teams and seven against Division V and XI schools.

Lucky for us the Southern Section has it covered: The Lions, with no league affiliation, broke into the Division VI poll at No. 10 last week.
