The Tower of London, one of the most popular attractions in the British capital, has special programs year-round. A sampling:

* April 14-22: “Escape From the Tower.†Follow the exploits of Ranulf Flambard, Bishop of Durham-the Tower’s first prisoner-who fled using a smuggled rope in 1101, and other escapees. * May 26-June 3: “Wellington, the Iron Duke.†A 19th century view of the Tower through the eyes of its constable, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, who emptied the moat and made other changes. Includes maneuvers by soldiers in period uniform.

* September-February 2002: “Essex, the Dashing Traitor.†Special exhibition marks the 400th anniversary of the execution of Robert Devereux, second Earl of Essex, “favorite†of Queen Elizabeth I and the last person beheaded at the Tower.

* Oct. 20-28: “Colonel Blood and the Great Crown Jewels Robbery.†Daily tours focus on an attempted heist in 1671 that nearly succeeded.

* Dec. 27-31: “A Magical Medieval Christmas.†Processions of costumed guides, minstrels and storytellers re-create Christmas as celebrated by the court of King Edward I.
