FRESHWATER
Los Angeles County
CASTAIC LAKE--Bass are biting on plastics, live bait, jigs, and crawdad-colored cranks in five to 25 feet of water. Everything else has been slow.
PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish are biting in the Yellowbar area. Trout have been slow but bass action is improving.
PUDDINGSTONE LAKE--Trout bite is fair but the bass bite is very good, with fish moving to the shallows. Thomas Casias, Montclair, caught and released nine bass, one of 3 pounds 6 ounces.
Ventura County
LAKE CASITAS--The bass bite has broken wide open. Lots of four-eight-pound fish showing daily on live bait and plastics. The bigger fish are taking trout-like baits. The trout bite is also good for trollers in the Wadleigh Arm using Needlefish on 1 1/2-2 colors of lead-core line.
LAKE PIRU--The trout and bass bites both turned on. Trout hitting trolled Needlefish or inflated nightcrawlers. Bass are taking nightcrawlers, Power Worms, and spinnerbaits.
Santa Barbara County
LAKE CACHUMA--Trout action has continued good for trollers working the east end, the island, the narrows and Santa Cruz Bay with Needlefish. Harvey’s Cove, E-Point, and Mohawk are best for shore anglers fishing Power Bait. The bass bite has been fair to good. The red-ear perch bite is starting to improve.
Orange County
SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--There were 37 trophy Mt. Lassen rainbows landed, one a near-record 22-pound 9-ounce fish by Gilbert Andrews, Anaheim, fishing a worm at Levitz’ Corner. A lake-record lightning trout at 9-9 was landed by Mike Guerrero, Riverside. The warm weather has also stimulated the catfish bite.
LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Rainbow action is excellent at mid-lake or on the back side. Some fish to six pounds reported. Bass are also biting with a lot of three- and four-pounders caught and released.
Riverside County
LAKE PERRIS--The largemouth bass bite is underway, with some to four pounds by anglers fishing plastics and crawdads. Trout action has been good east of the jet ski ramp for shore anglers and at the dam and Sail Cove for trollers.
LAKE ELSINORE--Trout action has been consistent and a few catfish have been caught. The bass bite is taking off as well but most of the fish reported are small.
CORONA LAKE--A lake- and state-record lightning trout weighing 10 1/2 pounds was caught by Pepe Rodrigo, Riverside, and 18 rainbows of 10 pounds or more were caught this week. The catfish bite is rivaling the trout action.
LAKE SKINNER--Trout action is good to excellent in the east end and at Ramp No. 2. Inflated night crawlers or Power Bait working best. The largemouth bass bite is also good.
San Bernardino County
LAKE SILVERWOOD--Trout and crappies have been biting and the largemouth bass bite is underway. Crappies are biting around the marina docks in 35 feet of water on red and white or yellow and white crappie jigs with Berkley Crappie Niblets. Most are running about three-quarters of a pound. Trout biting best in Cleghorn. The bass are still mostly in 12 to 15 feet.
BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout getting active in the bays and at Juniper Point. Still light fishing pressure.
GREGORY LAKE--A few trout were showing on Sierra Gold or inflated garlic night crawlers fished on short leaders near the bottom at the dam and at the San Moritz.
San Diego County
SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Crappie action excellent on El Capitan. Limits of 25 fish up to a pound each have been reported by dozens of anglers. The bass bite is good on Lower Otay, plastics and live baitworking best. On Upper Otay, the catch-and-release trout bite is fair and only a few bass have been reported. Largemouth bass are biting on San Vicente and a 16-plus-pound largemouth was caught by Cole Humphus, San Diego, at Murray.
LAKE WOHLFORD--Trout fishing has been excellent. Chad Quinones, 3, Canyon Lakes, caught his first fish, a 3-8 rainbow on rainbow Power Bait at the Senior Shoreline. Best baits have been inflated night crawlers and Power Bait. The bass and crappie bites are also starting.
DIXON LAKE--Rainbow action fair to good for boat anglers. The hot bait continues to be orange Power Worms. Largemouth bass fishing was off, compared to recent weeks.
Eastern Sierra
There is generally good fishing on the Lower Owens River in both the Wild Trout Stretch and below. Anglers floating the lower river in drift boats are reporting 20-30 fish a day, with some rainbows to five pounds. The Owens River Gorge is still fair to good with a lot of browns to 14 inches. Pleasant Valley Reservoir yielding fish to anglers fishing from float tubes at the dam.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--12 anglers (1 boat): 6 lingcod, 10 whitefish, 88 rockfish, 4 sand bass, 1 sculpin, 25 sheephead. (Hornet’s Landing)--4 anglers (1 boat): 18 red snapper, 1 lingcod, 1 sheephead, 14 rockfish, 1 sculpin.
OXNARD (Cisco’s)--38 anglers (2 boats): 48 whitefish, 1 sheephead, 22 sculpin, 320 rockfish, 60 red snapper, 1 halibut, 28 calico bass. (Captain Hook’s)--37 anglers (2 boats): 210 rockfish, 15 sculpin, 28 sheephead, 36 whitefish, 180 red snapper, 21 lingcod, 2 cabezon.
PORT HUENEME--29 anglers (2 boats): 1 halibut, 3 sheephead, 169 rockfish, 4 sand bass, 8 whitefish, 1 cabezon, 2 lingcod, 1 sole, 123 red snapper.
MARINA DEL REY--66 anglers (4 boats): 77 sculpin, 183 rockcod, 2 lingcod, 15 sand bass, 100 whitefish.
REDONDO BEACH--35 anglers (3 boats): 4 halibut, 6 whitefish, 8 red snapper, 1 lingcod, 110 rockfish, 20 sand dabs.
SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--26 anglers (1 boat): 115 whitefish, 65 red rockcod, 20 rockfish, 15 sculpin, 12 sheephead. (22nd St. Landing)--32 anglers (2 boats): 12 yellowtail, 8 calico bass, 1,250 sand dabs, 11 sculpin, 6 sheephead, 14 whitefish, 14 blue perch, 4 rockfish.
LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--15 anglers (2 boats): 6 yellowtail, 118 rockfish, 1 halibut, 51 whitefish, 11 sheephead, 7 sculpin, 16 salmon grouper, 10 red snapper, 14 perch, 2 sole.
NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--22 anglers (1 boat): 2 calico bass, 5 rockfish, 9 sculpin, 4 blue perch, 4 sole, 10 sand dabs. (Davey’s Locker)--38 anglers (2 boats): 1 yellowtail, 4 sand bass, 4 calico bass, 35 rockfish, 42 sculpin, 3 sheephead, 2 whitefish.
OCEANSIDE (Helgren’s)--43 anglers (3 boats): 1 soupfin shark, 23 sand bass, 30 sculpin, 82 red snapper, 37 whitefish, 82 rockfish.
SAN DIEGO (Seaforth)--67 anglers (3 boats): 7 barracuda, 6 sand bass, 56 rockfish, 60 whitefish, 2 sheephead, 121 sculpin. (Islandia)--20 anglers (2 boats): 75 mackerel, 92 rockfish, 15 sculpin, 1 calico bass, 5 sand bass, 31 whitefish.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY--Arroyo Seco Creek, Big Tujunga Creek (Upper and Lower), Echo Park Lake, Kenny Hahn Park Lake, Lincoln Park Lake, Magic Johnson Park Lake, San Gabriel River (East and West forks). RIVERSIDE--Cahuilla Park Lake, Evans Lake, Rancho Jurupa Park Lake. SAN BERNARDINO--Glen Helen Park Lake, Lytle Creek (Middle and North forks), Mojave Narrows Park Lake, Santa Ana River, Santa Ana River (South Fork), Seccombe Park Lake, Silverwood Lake, Yucaipa Park Lake.
