Big Inning, Big Win for Mater Dei

Mater Dei scored nine runs in the sixth inning and beat host Costa Mesa, 15-4, in the championship game of the Foothill/Costa Mesa baseball tournament Monday. The game was called after six innings due to the mercy rule.
With the Monarchs leading, 6-4, Sergio Santos’ bases-loaded double scored two runs, and Richard Mercado followed with a three-run home run to make it 11-4.
Mercado went three for three with two home runs, his third and fourth of the season, and five RBIs. Santos had three RBIs and Andy Castillo, who hit a two-run homer in the sixth, scored four runs.
Starting pitcher Jason Gagne (2-0) went five innings and struck out six to get the win for the Monarchs (8-0), ranked second in Orange County. Costa Mesa is 6-1.
In Sea View League baseball:
Aliso Niguel 7, Laguna Hills 0--Darren Pitchford pitched a three-hit shutout and Pat Hebeler had a double, a home run and two RBIs for visiting Aliso Niguel (5-2, 1-1).
Newport Harbor 13, Woodbridge 11--Newport Harbor’s Jon Vandersloot went four for four with two doubles and six RBIs for the Sailors (4-3, 1-2).
Joel Clark had four hits for Woodbridge (3-4, 0-2).
In nonleague baseball:
Santiago 12, Inglewood Morningside 1 (5, mercy)--Danny Florido, Cesar Cabral and Brian Pilkington homered for host Santiago (3-1).
In Century League boys’ golf:
Foothill 199, Canyon 229--Foothill’s Mike Reinsch had three birdies and shot a one-under 35 at Tustin Ranch.
In Pacific Coast League boys’ tennis:
No. 3 University 16, Costa Mesa 2--Host University (6-2, 2-0) swept all nine sets in singles. Anson Hsu swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, Michael Haier won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 and Edwin Chen swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3.
