SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After a two-month search for a new city manager, the City Council appointed Dan Singer to the position this week, a move that will very likely leave an empty seat on the board of the Ojai Unified School District.

Singer, who has worked for the city of Ojai since 1992, had served as interim city manager since December, when Andy Belknap resigned to accept a job as the county’s first chief financial officer. Belknap later backed out of accepting the post, citing health problems.

For the past three years Singer, 36, has been Ojai’s director of general services. He assumed his new $97,500-a-year job Thursday, city officials said.

In November, Singer, who has two small children, won a seat on Ojai’s school board and will now very likely have to resign that post for conflict of interest reasons, said Van Riley, district superintendent. The board will meet March 13 to consider the matter, Riley said.

“Everyone here appreciates Dan Singer very much,†Riley said.

If Singer resigns, the district could either choose to hold a special election or appoint a replacement, Riley said.

A special election for the Moorpark Unified School District in July 1999 cost $21,500, county election officials said.
