Temple Gets Boot From the Big East in Football

BOSTON — Temple will soon be looking for a new football conference after being informed it is no longer wanted in the Big East.
“They have not, since 1996, fulfilled our criteria for membership,” Thomas P. McElroy, senior associate commissioner, said Wednesday night. Conference members must meet basic requirements in non-conference scheduling and attendance.
“Our presidents have informed Temple that since they have not been in compliance, they are going to discontinue their affiliation with the conference,” McElroy said.
He added that it has not been determined when Temple would leave the Big East, though it could be before the 2001 season. The Owls are member of the Atlantic 10 in all other sports.
The initial report of the Big East’s decision to oust Temple appeared on The Boston Globe’s Web site.
Last season, Temple averaged only 18,612 fans in six home games.
