Unknowns Steal the Tennis Show
Upsets were in order in the girls’ 18 singles division of the Southern California Junior Sectional Tennis Championships on Thursday at Fountain Valley.
Unseeded players Brooke Borisoff of Agoura Hills, Angie Haynes of Compton and Samantha Hammond of Westlake Village each defeated highly seeded opponents in the round of 16.
Borisoff, who will attend California on a tennis scholarship beginning in the fall, eliminated third-seeded Brittany Reitz, 6-2, 6-3.
Reitz, who will be a senior at Newport Beach Corona del Mar High in the fall, won the Southern Section singles title last season.
Haynes knocked off fifth-seeded Lindsey Nelson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Nelson, a sophomore at Villa Park High, teamed with Judith De Vera of Carson to win the Southern California sectional doubles title last year.
Hammond defeated eighth-seeded Tracy Lin, 6-4, 6-4. Lin, who just completed her freshman year at Anaheim Canyon High, moved up two divisions after winning the girls’ 14 sectional title last year.
