Four federal prosecutors from Los Angeles will receive a U.S. attorney general’s distinguished service award for their work prosecuting avowed racist Buford O. Furrow Jr., authorities said.

The award, which will be presented during a ceremony Wednesday in Washington, D.C., will go to Michael J. Gennaco, Michael Terrell, Caroline C. Wittcoff and Bobbi Bernstein.

Gennaco headed the civil rights section of the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles until recently when he resigned to monitor internal investigations at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Terrell, who heads the U.S. attorney’s narcotics section, and Wittcoff, who replaced Gennaco, are both assistant U.S. attorneys in Los Angeles. Bernstein is a trial lawyer assigned to the attorney general’s civil rights division.

Furrow is serving a life term after pleading guilty earlier this year to murdering a Filipino American postal worker and wounding five people, including four children, at a Jewish community center during a hate-motivated shooting rampage in the San Fernando Valley in 1999.
