A former ophthalmologist convicted of orchestrating an art heist from his Brentwood home to collect an insurance windfall, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison.

Steven G. Cooperman, convicted of conspiracy and other charges in July 1999, is scheduled to surrender to authorities Oct. 30.

Cooperman initially faced a lengthier term but prosecutors urged that it be reduced because he is cooperating in another investigation. U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie in Los Angeles also ordered him to pay restitution.

The indictment against Cooperman said he collected a $17.5-million insurance settlement after he arranged to have a Monet and a Picasso taken from his home in 1992.
