Fukuda’s Goals Help University Defeat No. 2 Eagles
Senior midfielder Yohei Fukuda scored two unassisted goals to lead University to a 2-1 upset of Santa Margarita, the second-ranked team in Orange County, in a nonleague boys’ soccer game Saturday at Santa Margarita.
Fukuda, who normally plays as a defender, scored on two free kicks. The game-winner came with five minutes remaining to break a 1-1 tie. He scored the first one in the 15th minute for University (5-5-3).
Luke Boughen scored in the 55th minute to tie it, 1-1, for Santa Margarita (14-3-2).
In other nonleague boys’ soccer:
Brea Olinda 2, Burbank Burroughs 0--Juan Guerrero of Brea Olinda, the top-ranked team in the county, scored on a breakaway in the 15th minute and Daniel Raymondo scored in the 30th minute off an assist from Danny Yezarski.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
No. 2 San Clemente 55, No. 6 Huntington Beach 36--The Tritons held Huntington Beach to one point in the second quarter. Lindsey Pluimer led San Clemente (13-2) with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Sara Brown had 12 points.
No. 9 Edison 54, Westminster 52 (OT)--Rachel Ziemann, who scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half, made a 10-footer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Bianca Ziemann added 18 points for the Chargers (12-4). Biava Arganda had 15 points for Westminster (11-5).
El Toro 48, Corona del Mar 35--Senior Carrie Twaddell finished with 16 points, 21 rebounds and 12 blocked shots and Tara Sickmeier scored 11 points for the Chargers (9-3).
No. 4 Irvine 42, Santa Margarita 34--Ali Grechko scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter to lead host Irvine to the win. Jody Carlson added seven points and 13 rebounds for Irvine.
Mater Dei 45, Calvary Chapel 44 (OT)--Teeya Fernandez made two free throws with three seconds remaining in overtime for the Monarchs. Jessica Williams had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Mater Dei (5-11).
Saddleback 65, University 61 (OT)--Alisa Carrillo, Alex Chavez and Patty Lepe each scored 15 points for Saddleback (11-3). Carrillo also had nine rebounds, three steals and four blocks.
Shaadi Araizand scored 17 points for host University (6-7).
Sonora 47, Cypress 39--The Centurions (8-7) limited Sonora’s Brandi Davis to 10 points but made only 12 of 30 free throws. The Raiders are 13-3.
In the Western girls’ water polo tournament championship game:
Los Alamitos 7, La Crescenta Crescenta Valley 6 (OT)--Susie Lewis scored two goals, including the game-winner early in sudden death, to help the Griffins win the title.
Drue Wawrzynski, the tournament MVP, scored three goals and drew five ejections for Los Alamitos (10-5).
In a nonleague game:
Carlsbad 8, Newport Harbor 7--Scottie Schaefer scored her fourth goal, the game-winner, as time ran out for Carlsbad (6-4-1). Katherine Belden had four goals for host Newport Harbor (10-2), ranked third in the county.
