Police Chief to Retire Amid Investigations

Providence’s police chief said he will retire next month after two years of turmoil, including the shooting death of a black officer and an FBI probe of his department. Col. Urbano Prignano Jr. denied the problems led to his decision. He had promised to clean up the department and cited the resignations or firings of six officers last year. But he has faced mounting problems over the last two years.
