LIMA, Peru — A prosecutor has formally asked for a 20-year sentence for Lori Berenson, setting the stakes for the New York woman as she awaits trial on charges of collaborating with rebels.
Berenson, 31, was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 by a military court on charges of helping plan a thwarted takeover of Peru’s Congress. She denies involvement in the plot. Her conviction was overturned in August, and she was granted a new trial in a civilian court.
A court spokesman said Berenson’s trial will not begin until the first week in March, at the earliest.
