Truck Kills 12 Children at Dance
A speeding truck plowed into a dance pavilion, killing 12 children and injuring 18 people, police said.
Nearly 2,000 people had gathered for holiday festivities Thursday night in El Salado, 150 miles west of Santo Domingo, the capital, police said.
The truck, carrying a cargo of sand, was traveling at about 45 mph, nearly 25 mph over the speed limit, when it veered off the road about 7 p.m., officials said.
An angry crowd fended off firefighters and police to torch the vehicle. Three people believed to be the driver and two passengers who escaped were arrested later.
