From Times Staff Reports
The city will begin installing 97 catch basin filters in storm drains today to reduce the amount of heavy metals, petroleum products and bacteria entering ocean waters, officials said.
Public works assistant George Bernard said the filters, which trap debris and litter in baskets, cost $60,000. Money came from the Orange County Urban Water Runoff Program, with matching city funds.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2002.
