Ventura Lowers Flags to Honor 2 Employees
Flags were lowered to half-staff at city buildings Monday to recognize two longtime municipal employees who died last week, according to officials.
Ralph E. Green, 52, of Ventura, a groundskeeper for 31 years, suffered a heart attack, city spokesman Richard Newsham said. Green cared for the lawns and gardens at City Hall.
Nicholas McCarthy, also 52 and from Ventura, succumbed Friday to complications from pancreatic cancer. He was a Ventura Fire Department engineer at Station No. 1. An 18-year employee, McCarthy restored the city’s 1919 firetruck, used to chauffeur Santa down Main Street each year.
“They were both well-liked and made great visible contributions to the city,†Newsham said.
The flags will remain at half-staff through Thursday.
