William O’Neil, founder of the newspaper Investor’s Business Daily, sued a unit of the Washington Post Co. for allegedly using his name and stock-picking methods in a book without his permission.
O’Neil claims that Dearborn Financial Publishing Inc.’s book “The Market Gurus” purports to explain his methods and strategies. O’Neil alleges that the publisher did not seek permission to include him in the book and that it contains errors and mischaracterizations.
O’Neil’s suit, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, asks for a court order forcing the publisher to remove all references to him and his methods, as well as unspecified monetary damages. He also seeks to bar Validea.com, a Web site used to promote the book, from using his name.
