Filly’s Perfect Record on the Line

Not only is this the final Friday of the Del Mar meet, it is also the last eight-race program. For the final four days of the season, there will be 10-race cards. This seems mandatory because there won’t be any racing in Southern California again until Thursday, when Fairplex Park begins its run in Pomona. The highlight for today’s twilight card is the $75,000-added Torrey Pines, a restricted stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Tamara Princess, the full sister to Riboletta, is the 8-5 morning-line favorite as she tries to remain unbeaten in her third start. Owned by Aaron and Marie Jones and trained by Eduardo Inda, the daughter of Roi Normand beat the highly regarded Double Cat, who is War Chant’s half-sister, in a sprint, then stretched out to a mile, the distance of the Torrey Pines, and won by three lengths. Her main competition will come from Irguns Angel, an impressive winner going 61/2 furlongs on Aug. 1, Cindy’s Hero and the comebacking Notable Career. Trained by Bob Baffert for owners John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm, Notable Career hasn’t run since finishing fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last Nov. 4.

Race of the day: The race before the Torrey Pines is an interesting turf affair with a field of 10. The fact that Cocky is the 7-2 favorite on Jeff Tufts’ morning line shows how contentious the one-mile race is. Other top contenders include Riverside and Lampedusa, but there are few, if any, throwouts in the contest.

Who’s hot: Bobby Frankel. What’s new? The trainer began the final week of the season with three winners Wednesday. Easily the most impressive was Surya, who blew away maidens by 12 lengths in her U.S. debut. Up the ladder with the 3-year-old daughter of Unbridled.

Who’s not: Nick Zito. The trainer has only one win at Saratoga from some 60 starters.

Exotically speaking: Exacta boxes in the sixth, keying Riverside with Lampedusa, Cocky and Jokerman.
