Latino employment growing

Latino employment grew 5.1% last year, faster than other major racial and ethnic groups, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Employment increased 2% among African Americans last year and 0.8% for whites.

The 3.5% rise in Latino population in 2000 only partially explains the strong employment growth. The surge also reflects a record level of employment among the Latino population with 64.9% of those over age 16 employed.

Overcoming barriers

The California Department of Rehabilitation is working with several Los Angeles-area organizations in an upcoming job fair aimed at placing people with disabilities and at-risk youths and adults.

Last year, more than half the 2,000 people with disabilities who attended the Cinco de Mayo Career Expo got job interviews, internships or work.

This year, participating employers include Boeing, Marriott and TRW.

The career fair is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 3, at the Hollywood Park Casino, 3883 W. Century Blvd.
