David Horowitz’s Ad
* Re “Agitation by Ad: Slavery Reparations Foe Puts College Papers in a Bind,†April 10:
David Horowitz has revealed the confusion of student journalists at our universities. These future editors and reporters seem to think that it is their role to censor viewpoints which they deem unacceptable, to protect the feelings of students who cannot tolerate unorthodox points of view and to oppose the traditional ideas of freedom of speech and a free press.
This is not their job at all. On today’s college campus, such actions are the job of the faculty.

Am I the only one who sees the hypocrisy in Horowitz’s outrage about the response to his admittedly inflammatory ad? He’s a typical right-winger who feels that free speech is OK as long as you agree with him or respond in a way that he feels is appropriate. Those who have spoken out against his ad have just as much right to express their feelings as he has to express his.

Sometimes I feel like I live at the turn of the 20th century when I read of the troubles Horowitz goes through in merely presenting a differing point of view. A view held by a majority of the people. The question of reparations is silly on its face, but the incredible bias of Big Money-controlled college campuses and their corporate cohorts in the media makes it all possible and even probable someday.
