ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Matt Leinart
Mater Dei, Football
Leinart completed 27 of 43 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns to lead Mater Dei to a near-upset of Concord De La Salle, the nation’s top-ranked team and owner of a national-record 103-game winning streak. Leinart threw for two fourth-quarter touchdowns and converted two fourth downs on the Monarchs’ final drive as they attempted to tie or win the game. However, a 34-yard field goal try in the final minute was wide.
* Russell Oschman
Huntington Beach, Football
Carried the ball 50 times for 268 yards and a touchdown, leading Huntington Beach to its first victory in nearly a year.
* Rob Yeilding
San Clemente, Water Polo
Helped the Tritons win the South Coast tournament with some stingy defense that included five steals.
Lindsey Nelson
Villa Park, Tennis
Nelson, a freshman, went undefeated in matches against top-ranked Corona del Mar, third-ranked Troy and unranked Edison. She had a surprisingly easy time against the Sea Kings’ top player, Anne Yelsey, winning, 6-2, in a 12-6 loss on Monday. Nelson, ranked No. 1 in girls’ 16s in Southern California, dropped only two games in Villa Park’s 11-7 loss to Troy on Thursday and one game in a 10-8 loss to Edison on Tuesday.
* Whitney Pavlik
Mater Dei, Volleyball
Earned all-tournament honors at the Las Vegas Durango tournament, helping the Monarchs finish second.
* Tracy Lin
Canyon, Tennis
Swept against seventh-ranked University, beating No. 1 Megan Biorkman, 6-0, and No. 2 Aimee Kim, 7-6 (3).
