Bryan Arguello
Villa Park, Football
Arguello caught a pass for a touchdown, scored another on a reverse, kicked three extra points, intercepted two passes and averaged more than 45 yards per punt, leading the Spartans to a 21-14 victory over Valencia in the season opener. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound senior also returned a punt 15 yards, which set up his 62-yard rushing touchdown and caught a 34-yard pass that led to a Spartan touchdown four plays later.

Esperanza, Football
Sonuyi carried the ball 32 times for 250 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Aztecs to a 28-14 victory over Upland.
* Matt Leinart
Mater Dei, Football
Completed 16 of 22 passes for 284 yards, with one passing and two rushing touchdowns, in the Monarchs’ win over Fallbrook.
Amber Steen
Newport Harbor, Cross-Country
Steen recorded the fastest girls’ time in the 17th Annual Laguna Hills cross-country invitational, winning the three-mile Division II junior/senior race in 17 minutes 58 seconds. Steen, the Southern Section Division II defending champion, who finished fifth in the state last season, finished 47 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Trabuco Hills’ Lindsay Grose. Steen’s time was also 42 seconds faster than her finish in last year’s race.
* Julie Allen
Fountain Valley, Cross-Country
Despite a fall, Allen won the Division I junior/senior event at the Laguna Hills Invitational with a time of 18:05.
* Amy Sarkaria
Villa Park, Volleyball
Had 32 kills and seven blocks in a four-game victory over Cerritos Gahr and had 22 kills in a victory over Trabuco Hills.
