UCI Beats Lobos in Soccer

UC Irvine junior Jon Spencer scored two goals, including a penalty kick in the 77th minute to give the Anteaters a 2-1 victory over New Mexico in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer game Sunday at Irvine.
Spencer gave the Anteaters (11-6-1, 4-1-1) a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, scoring on a crossing pass from Roger Davanger. Michael Bellows tied the score for the Lobos (6-11, 3-3) in the 58th minute.
Tyler Reid had five saves for UC Irvine, which hosts Cal State Northridge in a nonconference game Wednesday at 7 p.m.
In women’s soccer:
Chapman earns playoff spot--The Panthers were awarded a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs for the second consecutive year and the second time in the program’s history. Chapman finished the regular season 15-4-1, setting school records in victories and shutouts (13).
The Panthers will host UC Santa Cruz Wednesday in the first round. The winner will play Puget Sound.
In nonconference water polo:
USC 11, UC Irvine 8--Freshman Tim Wollthan scored three goals for No. 2 USC (15-4), which defeated No. 5 Irvine (14-5) for the third time this season. It was the Trojans’ 15th consecutive victory over the Anteaters since 1995.
Junior John Dorfi scored three goals for Irvine and Dan Hipp had seven saves.
