Juniors David McMurtry and Lamar Cole, two of the seven Paraclete football players injured on Oct. 19 when a sport utility vehicle slammed into a crowd of students, are expected to suit up for the Spirits’ Alpha League game against L.A. Baptist on Nov. 3.
McMurtry, the team’s starting kicker, and Cole, a reserve receiver, were two of six varsity players injured when a 1982 Jeep Wagoneer driven by John Owen Bower of Lancaster rammed into a picnic table on which the students were sitting as they waited for rides following practice.
Police arrested Bower, 36, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
None of the four other injured players are expected to play until at least Nov. 10, when Paraclete hosts Kilpatrick in a regular-season finale that could decide the league championship.

Senior Gary Sonkur of Montclair Prep had his streak of 200-yard rushing games snapped at five in last week’s 42-0 victory against Vasquez, but he’s still in the midst of a superb season.
Sonkur, who rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns in seven carries against Vasquez, has gained 1,464 yards and scored 21 touchdowns in 107 carries.
