One Killed, Four Seriously Hurt in Auto Accident Near Oxnard
NYELAND ACRES — A 44-year-old local woman was killed and four others seriously injured when a half-ton pickup truck broadsided a car here Tuesday evening just north of Oxnard, authorities said.
Rogelia Ramirez died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 5:15 p.m. on Santa Clara Avenue between Central Avenue and Friedrich Road, just around the corner from her home, authorities said.
Ramirez was riding in a 1984 Ford LTD being driven by her brother-in-law, Guillermo Huerta, 40, and also carrying Huerta’s two daughters, Micala, 16, and Manuela, 19, authorities said.
Huerta, also of Nyeland Acres, was turning onto Friedrich Road when his car was struck by a 1995 Dodge Ram truck driven by Pascual Hernandez Arroyo, 32, of Ventura, said California Highway Patrol Officer Dave Webb.
The intersection at Friedrich Road does not have a stop sign or a red light for people who are turning, Webb said, adding that it was too soon to tell who caused the crash.
The impact of the collision crushed the passenger side of the LTD, trapping the occupants, Webb said. Firefighters had to cut the car’s roof off to pull the victims out.
Arroyo, the pickup’s driver, and Manuela Huerta were being treated Tuesday night at Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura. Huerta’s father and sister were at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.
All four were in stable condition late Tuesday, Webb said.
The collision forced the closure of Santa Clara Avenue for more than two hours.
