The dream-like paintings of Hawaiian-born artist Mabel Alvarez, including her celebrated “Blue Madonna,†are on exhibit at Mission San Juan Capistrano. A native of Hawaii, Alvarez moved to Los Angeles in 1906. In 1915, she enrolled in the School for Illustration and Painting, directed by William V. Cahill. She became a prolific painter in the 1920s and 1930s.

Once the mainstay of Philharmonic Society of Orange County offerings, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has become in recent seasons only one among many Society-sponsored visitors. Zubin Mehta will conduct the orchestra in Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 (“Linzâ€) and Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 (“The Greatâ€). The program comes at the end of the Eclectic Orange Festival sponsored by the Society.
