Three-Pointers Are a Big Problem
It may be difficult to accept, but the Clippers are not the worst three-point shooting team in the NBA. Making only 26.5% of their attempts from behind the arc ranks them 27th of 29 teams.
Center Sean Rooks leads the Clippers in three-point shooting, but that’s because he made his only attempt. Of the players who are looked on to make perimeter shots, Eric Piatkowski, the franchise’s all-time three-point leader, is making 35.9% of his shots and Corey Maggette is knocking down 33.3% of his, but there’s a sharp drop-off after that.
“I’m concerned about our whole team’s three-point shooting,” Coach Alvin Gentry said. “Obviously, I would like to see us better from that spot.”
Lamar Odom and Keyon Dooling are making 27.3% of their three-point shots, followed by Quentin Richardson at 25% and Jeff McInnis at 22.7%. Rookie Darius Miles’ three-point shooting percentage is a lowly .091.
“NBA guys kind of get lured into [shooting three-pointers too much],” Gentry said. “You can step in three or four steps and shoot the basketball most of the time. . . . If we’re not shooting it well, we’re going to have to start thinking about doing that a lot more.”
