Stanford’s VanDerveer Reaches No. 500

Stanford Coach Tara VanDerveer added another accomplishment to her impressive coaching resume.

Freshman guard Nicole Powell scored 26 points as the 18th-ranked Cardinal (3-1) defeated Pacific (2-2), 73-65, giving VanDerveer her 500th career victory. VanDerveer, 500-143 (.778) overall, has collected 348 of her victories with the Cardinal.

Freshman Alana Beard had 13 points, six assists and five steals as No. 3 Duke (7-0) beat Toledo (2-1), 71-41, to win the Duke Women’s Classic for the ninth consecutive year at Durham, N.C. . . . Katie Douglas scored 18 points, and No. 4 Purdue used a strong second-half surge to beat South Carolina, 68-53, at Cancun, Mexico. . . . Karlita Washington scored 10 points in a 20-0 run in the second half as No. 7 Rutgers (3-0) beat George Washington (2-2) in the championship game of the Coca-Cola Classic, 81-54, at Piscataway, N.J. . . .
