Billy Chavez, the leading rusher for Loara High, will be sidelined because of a broken collarbone when the Saxons meet Tustin in a Southern Section Division VI playoff game Friday night at Glover Stadium, Loara Coach John deFries said Tuesday.

Chavez was injured in Loara’s 31-14 first-round victory over Cerritos last week. Chavez, a senior who also plays in the defensive backfield, has gained 1,440 yards and scored 17 touchdowns this season.

Junior Sam Wiecks is Chavez’s probable replacement at running back, deFries said.

VOLLEYBALL

Kris Kraushaar, a 6-foot-6 opposite from Irvine High, signed with UCLA, the school announced. Kraushaar, a second-team Times Orange County selection last season, helped Balboa Bay win the Junior Olympics 17s championship last summer.

Coach Al Scates, who has led UCLA to 18 national championships in 38 years, said Kraushaar is part of a recruiting class that included all of the Bruins’ top choices.

“I think Kris and David Russell [of Simi Valley Royal] are impact players,” Scates said. “We only sent out five letters of intent this year, and all five of those players signed with us. I don’t recall ever doing that before.”

Scates also likes that Kraushaar is left-handed. Last season, left-handers Evan Thatcher, from Encinitas, and Ed Ratledge, from Fountain Valley, played opposite and helped the Bruins win the national title.

* Nic Vislay, a middle blocker from Capistrano Valley High, signed with UC Irvine, the school announced. Vislay also played on the Balboa Bay 17s Junior Olympics championship team.
