DIVISION III

Harvard-Westlake def. Tollhouse Sierra, 15-6, 15-5, 15-7--Middle blocker Courtney Schultz didn’t want to get carried away about her team’s victory at Harvard-Westlake.

Schultz realizes the competition will get a lot more difficult. The match was over in slightly more than an hour.

“It was good practice for the rest of the state playoffs,” she said. “We want a state title, but we know we have to win two more matches to get [to the final].”

Schultz, who led the top-seeded Wolverines (24-2) to their fourth Southern Section title in six years last week, came through with another dominant performance.

She finished with 16 kills and six digs and was particularly effective in the first two games.

The match might have ended sooner but Coach Jess Quiroz of Harvard-Westlake played several reserves after the Wolverines built a 12-2 lead in the third game.

Middle blocker Terbrie Taylor had 11 kills and three digs, and Karalyn Kuchenbecker added nine kills and three digs for Harvard-Westlake.

“Karalyn came out swinging,” Quiroz said. “She was pretty much unstoppable.”

As lopsided as it was, Coach Shannon Harris of Tollhouse Sierra (9-8) wasn’t too impressed with the Wolverines.

“I was expecting them to be a lot more consistent, more aggressive and hit harder,” she said. “For a No. 1 seed, I expected a lot more out of them.”
