Former Los Alamitos High quarterback Kevin Feterik has signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Stampede of the Canadian Football League, his mother Terri said.
Feterik, who graduated from Brigham Young, was drafted last April by the Seattle Seahawks and released in September.
* Mater Dei’s Southern Section Division I first-round playoff game against Long Beach Jordan Friday night at the Santa Ana Bowl will be broadcast by KPLS 830 AM starting at 7:25 p.m.
TENNIS
Fullerton’s Kevin Kim and his partner, James Blake, defeated Gareth Williams and Jeff Williams, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, in first-round doubles competition Wednesday at the USTA Pro Tennis Classic at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. They will meet Neville Godwin and Damien Roberts in a second-round match today.
BASEBALL
Capistrano Valley catcher Brad Davis has signed with Long Beach State, the school announced. Davis hit eight home runs last season and led the Cougars in a Division I championship game victory over Long Beach Wilson with four runs batted in.
* Andy Clay, an outfielder from Canyon, signed with UC Riverside, his coach, Joe Hoggatt, said. Clay, a first-team all-league player, hit nine home runs and had 32 RBIs last season.
SWIMMING
Senior sprinter Jonathan Russell of Santa Margarita has signed to compete at University of the Pacific. Russell held the county’s top times last year in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
SOCCER
UC Irvine sophomore Janelle Doyle, a former Newport Harbor midfielder, and Cal State Fullerton junior Tennli Ulicny, a midfielder from La Habra, were selected to the All-Big West Conference first team in women’s soccer.
Irvine senior goalkeeper Allison Merrick and junior midfielder Natalie Franklin were named to the second team, and sophomore midfielder Robyn Piotrowski earned honorable-mention honors.
Fullerton freshman defender Danielle Turnquist was named to the second team, and Titan sophomore defender Leah Sims of Orange received honorable mention.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Lindsay Geoffroy, a 6-foot-6 center at Los Alamitos, has signed with Iowa, Griffin Coach Mike Ford said.
MOTORSPORTS
Drivers continued to cross the finish line in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, at the conclusion of the Tecate SCORE Baja 2000 off-road desert race.
Orange County race winners who followed motorcyclist Johnny Campbell of San Clemente, the overall winner, across the finish after 1,679.54 miles on the Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas run were Steve Myers of Newport Beach in Class 10 (1650cc cars), Scot Steinberger of Cypress in Protruck/SS/Truck, Jeff Lewis of San Clemente in Class 7 (mini trucks) and Chris Haines of Trabuco Canyon in Class 40 motorcycles.
