Fountain Valley scored 35 unanswered points and held Marina to 93 yards in total offense as the Barons closed out the regular season with a 38-7 Sunset League victory Thursday at Westminster High School.
Fountain Valley (5-5 overall, 2-3) took sole possession of fourth place in the league standings and remains in contention for an at-large berth in the Southern Section Division I playoffs.
The loss proved damaging to Marina (6-4, 1-4), which with a victory could have made things fairly easy for the Division I selection committee.
Marina held a 7-3 lead with 4 minutes 42 seconds left in the first quarter after Beau Brown connected with Adam Hayward on a 23-yard touchdown pass.
But the Barons scored 14 points in a 19-second span later in the quarter to take the lead for good.
Casey Clark found Chad Triplett for a 37-yard scoring pass as the Barons regained the lead, 10-7, with 1:34 left in the quarter.
Then Fountain Valley’s Thomas Salue recovered a fumble deep in Viking territory, and Kjelf Johnson scored on the next play, a four-yard run.
Parris Moore, who led the Barons with 128 yards rushing in 16 carries, added a five-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter.
Vincent Nguyen intercepted two passes for the Barons, returning the first 37 yards for a touchdown.
