Foothill Is Not Flipping Out

Foothill League bylaws stipulate a three-way tie for first place is broken by a series of coin tosses.
Most leagues with similar rules perform their flips before the final games, but not the Foothill.
A Saugus victory over Hart Thursday night, along with a Valencia victory over Canyon, would have forced a tie, but league coaches elected to wait and see if Saugus could pull the upset first.
The Centurions didn’t, losing, 37-6, and saving all involved a little energy.
It was just as well, according to Coach Brian Stiman of second-place Valencia.
A three-way tie and a couple of bad bounces of the coin could have dropped Stiman’s Vikings (8-2, 4-1) to a No. 3 seeding from the Foothill and a likely first-round road game.
“A three-way tie can be a double-edged sword,” Stiman said earlier this week. “A championship would be nice, but I’d rather not end up being No. 3.”
