2. VIRGINIA TECH (8-1) lost to No. 3 Miami, 41-21. Hokies’ 19-game regular-season winning streak ended, as did Michael Vick’s chances of winning the Heisman Trophy. Next: at Central Florida, Saturday
3. MIAMI (7-1) defeated No. 2 Virginia Tech, 41-21. Hurricanes play two of their final three games at home but will have to avoid a letdown against capable Pittsburgh. Next: Pittsburgh, Saturday
4. FLORIDA STATE (9-1) defeated No. 10 Clemson, 54-7. An impressive display of offense by the Seminoles, who roll up 771 yards in a drubbing their ACC rival. Next: at Wake Forest, Saturday
5. NEBRASKA (8-1) defeated Kansas, 56-17. Cornhuskers rebound from disheartening loss to Oklahoma and win their 32nd in a row over the Jayhawks. Next: at Kansas State, Saturday
6. FLORIDA (7-1) defeated Vanderbilt, 43-20. The Gators held the Commodores to 199 yards and intercepted five passes, and have now forced 33 turnovers. Next: No. 22 South Carolina
7. OREGON (8-1) defeated Washington State, 27-24. Ducks won their second consecutive overtime road game and will go to the Rose Bowl if they win out. Next: California, Saturday
8. WASHINGTON (8-1) defeated Arizona, 35-32. Huskies would earn berth to Rose Bowl if they tie for Pacific 10 Conference title with Oregon and Oregon State. Next: UCLA, Saturday
9. TEXAS CHRISTIAN (7-1) lost to San Jose State, 27-24. Horned Frogs’ 12-game winning streak--longest in the nation--comes to an end at hands of the Spartans. Next: Fresno State, Saturday
10. CLEMSON (8-2) lost to No. 4 Florida State, 54-7. After winning eight in a row against questionable opposition to start the season, the Tigers have dropped two in a row. Next: South Carolina, Nov. 18
11. PURDUE (7-2) did not play. Boilermakers are tantalizingly close to being undefeated. They lost two games (Notre Dame and Penn State) by two points on the road. Next: at Michigan State, Saturday
12. MICHIGAN (6-3) lost to No. 21 Northwestern, 54-51. Wolverines had shut out their previous two opponents, but now their Rose Bowl hopes are dashed. Next: Penn State, Saturday
13. SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (6-2) lost to Louisville, 49-28. The Golden Eagles were 24-2 against Conference USA opponents entering the game. Make that 24-3. Next: at Alabama Birmingham, Saturday
14. OREGON STATE (8-1) defeated California, 38-32. Beavers haven’t been to the Rose Bowl since 1964 and will need some breaks to go their way if they hope to return. Next: at Arizona, Saturday
15. NOTRE DAME (6-2) did not play. The Fighting Irish lost their first fumble in narrow victory against Air Force, but remained poised for a berth to a BCS game. Next: Boston College, Saturday
16. OHIO STATE (7-2) defeated Michigan State, 27-13. Spartans, who led at one point, 13-3, had dealt the Buckeyes two unforgettable losses the last two seasons. Next: at Illinois, Saturday
17. GEORGIA (6-2) did not play. The Bulldogs have only three sacks in the last two games and 15 in eight games. They rank eighth in the Southeastern Conference in that category. Next: at Auburn, Saturday
