Sylmar Seeded No. 1 in City Volleyball
Sylmar High was seeded No. 1 in the City Championship girls’ volleyball playoffs, followed by Chatsworth and Poly.
The Spartans (13-0) hope to become the second team from the Valley to win the upper-division championship since City Section playoffs for girls’ volleyball began in 1973. They host University in a first-round match on Monday.
Chatsworth (12-1) hosts Bravo Medical Magnet. The Chancellors won the upper-division City title in 1994.
Poly (12-1) hosts Marshall.
Taft (10-2) was seeded No. 8 and hosts three-time defending champion Palisades in the first round.
Van Nuys (10-3), seeded No. 10, plays at Fremont. No. 13-seeded Grant (10-3) plays at Venice.
Granada Hills (8-5) was seeded No. 1 in the City Invitational and hosts Valley Alternative.
Kennedy (7-6) was seeded No. 2 and hosts El Camino Real.
COMMITMENTS
* Chris Seddon of Canyon High, one of the top left-handed pitchers in Southern California who was 6-3 with a 2.72 earned-run average as a junior, committed to Loyola Marymount.
* Eric Posthumus, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher at Hart, has committed to UC Santa Barbara.
Posthumus was 8-0 last season with a 1.62 earned-run average.
* Karina Siam of Harvard-Westlake, a two-time All-Valley girls’ basketball selection by The Times while at Alemany, has committed to UC San Diego.
* Alexis Weatherspoon of Grant High, two-time defending City Section champion in the girls’ 100 and 200 meters, has committed to USC.
* La Canada setter Tracy Neumeier, an All-Southern Section Division III girls’ volleyball selection last season, committed to Utah.
GOLF
* Lost Canyons Golf Club, designed by Pete Dye with Fred Couples as a consultant, opens its Sky Course today in Simi Valley.
