The planning commission has approved a 695,000-square-foot commercial shopping center at 1300 S. Beach Blvd.
Commissioners approved the project at a special session on Monday. The council will consider the project on Nov. 20.
ICI Development Co. is hoping to begin construction of the Westridge Plaza, a shopping center that will house five major retail stores and smaller tenants along Beach Boulevard and Imperial Highway. The site for the project previously housed a Chevron research facility.
If the council OKs the project, construction could begin before the year is out. The building now on site would be demolished. Developers expect the $60-million project, which will include a service station, to be open by winter 2002.
