TENNIS

* Harvard-Westlake and Westlake highs will play for Southern Section titles today at The Claremont Club.

Harvard-Westlake (25-3-1), seeded No. 2, plays top-seeded Peninsula at 2:30 p.m. in the Division I final.

Harvard-Westlake won the Division II championship last season and won two consecutive Division III titles in 1998 and 1997.

Westlake (20-0) will be attempting to snap a three-year losing streak in final matches against defending champion Beverly Hills in a Division III match at 1 p.m.

The Warriors lost to Beverly Hills in last year’s Division III title match, and were beaten by Beverly Hills in the Division II final in 1998. They fell to Harvard-Westlake in the 1997 Division III final.

* Jason Nguyen of Chatsworth High and James Magsino of El Camino Real play for the City Section singles championship at 2 p.m. today at the Warner Center Tennis Club.

CROSS-COUNTRY

* Germain Ortiz, sixth-place finisher in the City Section cross-country championships last year, has been granted another year of athletic eligibility.

Ortiz, 17, has attended Monroe for the last four years, but he was granted another year of eligibility because he has run cross-country and track only for the last two years and because he was mistakenly enrolled in the eighth grade instead of the seventh by school officials when he moved to the United States from Mexico.

Like many English as a second language students, Ortiz will take five years to complete his graduation requirements at Monroe.

BASEBALL

* Doug Slaten, an all-conference pitcher at Pierce College who was 10-3 this season, has turned down an offer from the Baltimore Orioles.

Slaten will go back into the pool for the amateur draft on Monday. If he doesn’t sign, he plans to attend UCLA in the fall, according to Coach Bob Lofrano.

MOTOR SPORTS

* Cory Kruseman of Ventura finished seventh in the 50-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.

Richard Griffin of Silver City, N.M. won the race.

* Greg Taylor, 17, of Ojai won the 30-lap sprint car feature Saturday at Ventura Raceway to move into third place in the points standings.

Points leader Gary Howard of Ventura was second, and Randy Moody of Ventura finished third.

Defending International Motor Contest Assn. modified track champion Donald Houghton of Lancaster won the 20-lap main event, and Tom Stephens of Ventura took a third 20-lap street stock feature.

Marty McLaughlin of Thousand Oaks became the fifth I-4 modified winner in five races after going wire-to-wire from the pole in the 20-lap main event.
