Newport Harbor Sails to Victory

The Newport Harbor sailing team won at the high school double-handed nationals last weekend at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach.
Competing in the flying juniors division in a 36-race regatta, Newport Harbor finished first among 20 of the top programs in the country. The team will compete next weekend in the national team racing championships in Norfolk, Va.
Members of Newport Harbor’s team are A Division skipper Scott Hogan and crews Meredith Potter and Gary Grimes, and B Division skipper Tyler Haskell with crews Paige Thompson and Ryan Marshall. Additionally, Amy Halvorsen will compete in Virginia.

Craig Bennett has resigned as girls’ soccer coach at El Modena High, girls’ Athletic Director Alan Clinton said Monday.
Bennett, assistant athletic trainer at Chapman the last two years, is a former goalkeeper who helped the Panthers to the NCAA Division III semifinals in 1995. He coached the Vanguards for one season.
