Irvine Valley’s Rice Signs With UC San Diego

Craig Rice, an Irvine Valley sophomore, has committed to UC San Diego, according to Laser Coach Jerry Hernandez.
Rice, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard, is fourth on Irvine Valley’s career list for three-pointers made with 93. A Santa Margarita High graduate, Rice averaged eight points and was named the Lasers’ top defensive player last season.
WEIGHT LIFTING
Dustin Gaptill, a sophomore at Huntington Beach High, won the 146-pound division at the Montreal School Age Weight Lifting Championships on Saturday.
Gaptill, who was invited to the event by the United States Weight Lifting Assn., lifted 198 pounds in the snatch and 247 pounds in the clean and jerk.
VOLLEYBALL
Nancy Welliver has been named full-time women’s volleyball coach at Cypress College, school officials announced.
Welliver, who coached 14 years at Cerritos College and three at Fullerton College, replaces Michael Soylular, who coached the team for the last three years.
Welliver led Cerritos to the 1992 state title and guided Fullerton to the state final in 1996.
SOCCER
Sarah Moranville, a senior at Pacifica High, has been selected to play for the American Youth Soccer Organization’s first All-American team, an organization spokesperson announced.
A forward/midfielder, Moranville began playing AYSO at age 5. The All-American team will travel to Australia and New Zealand this summer to participate in the Kanga Cup.
