Sylmar’s Four Runs in 7th Beat Van Nuys

Sylmar High used a circus-like seventh inning to stay undefeated in Valley Mission League play.

The Spartans parlayed three walks, two errors, a single, a squeeze and sacrifice fly into four runs to beat Van Nuys, 7-4, Thursday at Sherman Oaks Park.

The Spartans (8-3, 4-0 in league play) trailed, 2-1 after three innings, 3-2 after four, and 4-3 after six.

Alvaro Santos and Fidelmar Jaimes each had two hits for Sylmar.

Van Nuys is 4-9 and 1-3.

In other high school games:

El Camino Real 7, Birmingham 2--Sean Thomas hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Beau Savage drove in four runs in a West Valley League game at El Camino Real.

Savage hit a two-run single and a two-run double as El Camino Real (9-2, 4-0) built a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Greg Acheatel (3-2) did not allow an earned run in 5 2/3 innings for El Camino Real.

Jose Carrillo had two hits, including a double, for Birmingham (5-6, 0-4).

Chatsworth 5, Cleveland 1--Joe Guntz (4-0) pitched a five-hitter, Gregg Wallis doubled, singled and drove in two runs in a West Valley League game at Cleveland.

Brian Lee had three hits and drove in a run for the Chancellors (9-1-1, 4-0), ranked No. 6 in the region.

Andrew Strickland had two hits for the Cavaliers (5-6, 1-3).

Granada Hills 10, Taft 0--Ed Degerman struck out eight, walked none and allowed one hit in a West Valley League game at Granada Hills (7-4, 3-1) that was halted in the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.

Dale Curry had two hits and two RBIs.

San Fernando 17, Reseda 2--Manny Flores hit a double and a home run for San Fernando (5-6, 3-1) in a Valley Mission League game at Reseda (2-5, 0-4) halted after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Kennedy 16, Monroe 4--Fonzie Mora had two hits and five RBIs in a Valley Mission League game at Kennedy stopped in the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.

Phil Avlas had two doubles and scored three runs for Kennedy (5-7, 2-2).

COLLEGE

Canyons 10, Oxnard 4--The Cougars blew open a Western State Conference interdivisional game by scoring eight runs in the final two innings at Oxnard.

Eric Ballew had two hits, including a grand slam in the ninth, and Steve Lombardi and Bill McGrath each had a double, single and two runs batted in for Canyons (12-11, 8-6).

Steve Redfern (5-1) went the distance, scattering eight hits with five strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs.

Glendale 7, Santa Barbara 2--Gil Hernandez (4-1) pitched his first complete game and Jon Horowitz had three of the Vaqueros’ 16 hits in a WSC interdivisional game at Santa Barbara.

Hernandez allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked none.

Mike Roux had four hits and drove in a run for Glendale (12-13-1, 7-7).

Pierce 11, Hancock 4--Jack Cassel (3-1) struck out eight in seven innings and hit a two-run home run for the Brahmas (12-10, 8-6) in a WSC interdivisional victory at Pierce.

Pepperdine 14, Winthrop 2--Danny Garcia and Damon Katz each had three RBIs for the Waves (19-13) in a Hawaii tournament game halted in the seventh because of a 12-run rule.

Mike Falco, a freshman from Agoura High, doubled and scored three runs for the Waves.
